One of the basic concepts of immunity in the early days of the twentieth century has been that if immunity is going to benefit us, it has to be directed to something foreign, something outside of the body. So it has always been the understanding of immunologists that the immune response only concerns bacteria, viruses and foreign.

These diseases are chronic and can be life-threatening. Autoimmune disease is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in female children and women in all age groups up to 64 years of age.

Many of these illnesses can only be determined by extensive testing that many people are not willing to undertake unless they have absolutely no choice. In the case of multiple sclerosis one of the most devastating autoimmune diseases the diagnosis may be the result of eliminating all other possibilities.

This defense though highly effective for most threats, is not very specific, highly trained or lethal against serious threats. It also can be penetrated or breached easily though it may be linked to an alarm system that can signal for help.

Most bugs and bacteria contain beta-glucans in their cell walls and these beta glucans stimulate the immune system in such a way as to build up normal healthy immunity.

But the hope is that by eliminating one of the three factors associating these diseases and leading to autoimmunity (the body essentially attacking itself), namely the heightened immune reactivity, the leaky gut or the external trigger, they might be able to curb and even eliminate the symptoms of the fundamental disease.
