Slipped Disc Treatment

By Jony Depth at 2010-11-03 07:26:39
This article will discuss what a herniated or bulged disc is, when it occurs, why it occurs, and how you can get a slipped disc treatment.

Although care must be used to avoid an exacerbation of your symptoms secondary to improper use of technique and form with each selected exercise. Therefore, you may want to consult your physician prior to starting any back pain exercise program.

The patient may also take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers like Tylenol and Advil. Simple exercises that strengthen and stretch the back may provide a lot of relief. Physiotherapy and massage may also help, if required. 95% of the people are cured by these simple steps.

The sciatic nerve becomes pinched and you begin to feel pain around your lower back which gradually radiates towards your buttocks and then goes all the way down to your leg causing your feet and legs to feel numb.

The leaking jellylike substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause pain either around the damaged disc or anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve. This condition is also known as a herniated, ruptured, prolapsed, or more commonly slipped disc.

They are positioned or located in between the vertebrae of your spine and help to absorb the shock accompanying your every bend or twist and saving you from having to feel the stress involved with that.

Discs are found between every two vertebrae (spinal bones), so we have 22 discs from the neck to lower back. The structure and size of each disc varies as you go down the spine, with the largest discs (and most prone to damage) found in the low back just below the waistline.

On its own, your spine would be unable to provide sufficient elasticity for you to curl up into a ball and roll along the ground. In fact, your spinal range of motion would be severely hampered without the discs in place.

Without doubt, there will be plenty of people walking around today, 100% pain free, yet if they were to have an MRI scan of their lower back, some disc bulges would be present.

When your disc is inflamed, it gets swollen and hence it is hard to get back into its normal position because it is enlarged. Putting a cold and ice pack well help shrink the swelling, and hence allows the disc to ease back into its normal position.

If too much stress is placed across the discs, the fibrous outer layer of the disc can become weakened and consequently, the jelly like inner substance can begin to protrude outwards, just like an inner tube can protrude from a weak spot in a tyre.

When those results are compared to conservative treatment for a lumbar herniated disc at one year, the results are equivalent. So if the patient can stand the sciatica pain until it resolves, he or she can avoid the risks of surgery.
